John Mund is a Data Manager at the University of Colorado CIRES, working in the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, U.S. In 2001, John received a master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Colorado Denver College of Engineering and Applied Science. John’s career began at the telecommunications firm EchoStar in 1996, where he worked on distance learning applications. After completing his graduate degree in 2001, he transitioned to the medical industry as a database application developer for MIQS, a company specializing in patient-centric record systems for managing complex chronic diseases. His skills and deep understanding of the system’s large-scale distributed datasets quickly made him a valuable resource in medical research efforts to improve patient care and health outcomes. In 2015, John joined the Carbon Cycle and Greenhouse Gases Group of the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) to help manage the enormous data flows from GML’s global atmospheric measurement network. In this position, John develops database applications for research, visualizations, quality control, and distribution to the scientific community. He also manages systems used in inter-comparison efforts with international collaborators to help meet quality and compatibility goals. John has represented the lab from a data management perspective in several U.S. governmental projects, such as the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center (GHGC), and internationally at the WMO Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (G3W) as well as at conferences like the WMO/IAEA Meeting on Carbon Dioxide, Other Greenhouse Gases, and Related Tracers Measurement Techniques (GGMT).
