Dr Angelique Botha is chief metrologist at the NMISA, South Africa is the current chairperson of ISO/TC 334, the ISO Technical Committee on Reference Materials. She also serves on other national and international ISO committees responsible for the development of conformity assessment standards in the competence of testing and calibration laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025), reference material producers (ISO 17034) and proficiency testing providers (ISO/IEC 17043). Dr Botha also serves on several of the working groups of the Consultative Committee for Metrology in Chemistry and Biology (CCQM). In 1997, she joined the National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA) as their first chemical metrologist, tasked with the responsibility to establish a facility for metrology in chemistry for South Africa. After establishing the first accredited gas metrology laboratory in South Africa, she completed her PhD-studies in 2010 with a project to characterise South African geological reference materials using isotope dilution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ID-ICPMS). She then became more involved with projects in the inorganic analysis laboratory, focussing on the trace and ultra-trace analysis of toxic and nutritional elements in food and environmental matrices. Dr Botha has published more than 20 papers on metrology in chemistry in peer-reviewed journals. Her current responsibilities include the production of matrix certified reference materials for elements in food, the organisation of proficiency testing (PT) schemes, training and consulting as well as the supervision of Masters and PhD students. She developed and for many years presented a course on the estimation of uncertainty of measurement for analytical chemists for the National Laboratory Association of South Africa (NLA). She is also qualified as a technical assessor to assist with assessments to ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 17034 for the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) and performs peer reviews for other international accreditation bodies.
